Before Highway 4 to Ucluelet and Tofino was upgraded, Bamfield was the sportfishing and marine excursion hub at of the pacific west coast on Vancouver Island. The flats off of Cape Beal are home to huge halibut. Unlike other fishing towns with drop offs near the coast, Bamfield, more than any other town in Barkley Sound, has a gently sloping bottom which offers numerous near offshore fishing opportunities.
Its home of the 800 km Neptune Project which is one of the most significant scientific endeavors of our time. Its home of the Marine Sciences Centre which is also the venue for the famous music festival, Music by the Sea.
