If you haven’t had a dungeness crab and enjoy the Altantic lobster then you are in for a delight. The sweetest taste of Vancouver Island is found near the fresh water outflows into Barkley Sound. Only males over 6.25 inches across may legally be harvested. We have found them to be especially prolific in Sarita and Effingham Bays. In the summer they are found in the shallows and in the winter can be found down to 300 feet 50 fathoms.
We clean the crab and steam them for 8 minutes. Rinse them in cold water to stop the cooking process and separate the meat from the shell. We have collected a series of crab tools over the years that make the crab dinner feel like a technical adventure. No, we don’t have lobster on the West Coast but we do have something equally tasty.
