Humpback Whale

Humpback Whale

Adult humpback whales are just over 50 ft. and weigh 80,000 lbs. They are popular with whale watchers for its acrobatics. Migrating some 16,000 miles each year, the Humpback diet is mostly krill. They like visiting the Broken Group when the herring come in to spawn. Humpbacks live from 50 to 100 years. Their eerie underwater song can last 20 minutes. Humpbacks are most commonly seen in the middle of Barkley Sound, especially around the Broken Group.

* Very exciting news. 2015 herring fishing has been stopped in this area. Whales follow the herring into the warmer shallows so we are expecting more whale sightings than ever. Already big herring are found in salmon in early March. Thank you DFO !!!
