Found over sandy bottoms of the Barkley Sound, especially off of Cape Beale, Folger Island, Sail Rock and the bays entering Ucluelet. The average halibut caught on the Oracle during the 2014 season was 47.6 lbs. Careful restrictions and preservations have built up the stocks successfully. Over the last 10 years halibut stocks have exploded and commercial fishermen have been catching 3 and 4 times the halibut of the previous 10-year span.
Chicken, barn door, slab or hali all refer to the mighty halibut.
