Oysters are quite prolific in Barkley Sound’s quiet backwater bays and inlets. Oysters require 10 days of 70 degree water to spawn naturally so they are suited to the Vancouver island weather and geography. They can be found between the low and high tide water marks where they stick themselves to rocks and are sometimes difficult to remove.
Commercial oyster farms dot the area especially in Effingham Inlet. Effingham’s Oysters are enjoyed throughout the country in fine restaurants. Oysters are at their best March to April but sure are tasty the rest of the year too! Whether or not they are truly an aphrodisiac is up for debate but a meal of oysters is truly a very special occasion.
It’s very popular to barbeque oysters and adding a bit of hot or bbq sauce with lemon and a drop of tequila explodes in a taste sensation that keeps us coming back.
