The Vermillion rockfish is a fiery crimson fish with a life span of 60 years and growing to 30 inches. Its often referred to as the red rock cod or red snapper. They are highly regulated as they are endangered. Their flaky white meat is very easy to prepare. For conservation, there are time periods where the season is closed. There are also slot sizes and in California there’s a depth restriction where you may not fish for them in water deeper than 300 feet. The state of Vermillion rockfish is fragile. They live a very long time and reproduce slowly. Often Vermillion rock fish are released on the Oracle. Its one of the most beautiful fish in the ocean, found on rock reefs on the outer islands and southern most edges of the Broken Group.
