This is Folger Island, behind that is Japan, and on the hook is a 70lb slab. This is halibut country. Big fish are caught and lost here! Ocean pinnacles with shoals dropping gently give these monsters ambush areas to hunt as the tides bring food to the feisty flatfish of Folger Island.
About a kilometer away, down 8 fathoms is part of the Neptune project. It’s one of the decade’s most important scientific marine projects. Over 800 kilometers of ocean cable loops around the ocean and back to Port Alberni. Along the way, cameras and seismic equipment measure earth movements. Tsunami predictions are calculated and the smallest tremors recorded.
Come explore, but be prepared because the sea lion population has something to say about the intrusion. There’s a good chance of losing a salmon to the seals and sea lions which make Folger Island their home. They’ve learned to crash dinner from the end of your line.
