Octopus

Octopus

The octopus is a very intelligent species, with the ability to blend into the area around them. They are found just about everywhere there are rocks, especially off Cape Beale. The Ucluelet Aquarium and the Bamfield Marine Science Centre both usually have an octopus in their tanks for viewing, and complements any eco tour.

Eight arms and suckers help catch their prey. When threatened, an octopus will secret a black ink to confuse their predators while they escape. The jet propelled octopus has three hearts. Two hearts pump blood into their lungs and one to their body. They have a great problem-solving talent and are one of the most adept problem solvers of the invertebrates. Octopus can live up to 5 years.

We have come across many octopus especially when fishing halibut. When they latch onto the back of the boat you can not remove them. We just watch in amazement until they decide it's time to go.
